Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
I shall never forget seeing this Lady after swimming home from Germany in 1961.
Strange, how the popularity of the military waxes and wanes over the years. It was totally shameful the way they were treated during the Vietnam years and now everyone has a "yellow ribbon" in their front yard and a "support the troops" bumper sticker on their SUV. I can assure you the troops prefer the latter. Just my $.02
BTW Kittylou, How was your Outer Banks vacation? I hope guys didn't get rained out.
PPS The "Brazen Greek of Fame" dude: I didn't realize it until I watched the History Channel a few nights ago - That's the Collossus of Rhodes! |
